Tono is a city in Iwate prefecture, with an estimated population of 27000. It the place that inspired the “Tono monogatari” stories written by Yanagita Kunio, and is famous for being the setting of the Tono folk tales, in which fantastic creatures such as kappa and yashiki doji appear. Agriculture is flourishing, with wasabi and radishes being famous products of this area. HIttsumi (“wheat dumplings”) are Tono’s famous local dish.
