Shichitoui grass is the special igusa grass (grass for tatami) only found on the Kunisaki peninsula. Shichitoui grass has a triangular cross-sectional surface while other igusa grass have a round cross-sectional surface. Shichitoui grass has been used for weaving high-quality, durable sheets mainly for tatami mats. Weaving this special grass require traditional techniques. Even expert farmers are only able to weave 1 or 2 tatami sheets.

Shichitoui is well-known for its durability. It is used for seats of chairs, sandals, cup saucers and other kitchen related goods. If you have a chance to visit the Oita airport, please visit the kids area on the 2nd floor. The tatami is made out of shichitoui grass.
