The Ishiguro family has been living in this samurai residence for over 200 years. When I visited Ishiguro-ke (Ishiguro family house), Mr. Ishiguro and his father welcomed me and gave me a tour of the whole house. In Kakunodate, many samurai residences are open for tourists. I started my samurai residence tour from the Ishiguro samurai residence.

Ishiguro family has been the financial officer for the north Satake han. The roof of the main building is thatched and the black fences are long and simple. The houses in Kakunodate’s samurai district are minimal, creating a relaxing atmosphere.
Kakunodate was once a thriving castle town located in the northern part of the Semboku Plain. Located along the banks of the Tamagawa and Hinokinaigawa Rivers, this town is known for its historic samurai mansions and the beautiful blossoming cherry trees that line the streets.
